The clavicytherium is a historical stringed keyboard instrument, essentially an upright variant of the harpsichord, featuring vertically mounted strings and a soundboard oriented toward the player for a compact, space-efficient design.Originating in Europe during the late 15th century, it represents one of the earliest developments in plucked keyboard instruments, with the oldest verified surviving example dated to circa 1470 through dendrochronological analysis of its wood.
