To increase the volume of sound and improve stability, Broadwood patented this new type of concert grand in 1827.
The Patent on the nameboard refers to patent No 5485 registered by Broadwood on April 9th 1827. This instrument is constructed with a small hitchpin plate (a metal plate into which were set all of the hitchpins) and four iron bars above the strings. This allowed a thicker stringing to be used resulting in an authentic sound of the early romantic period in England.
