In the 2nd half of the 19th century, Theodore Steinweg/Steinway inventions and patents greatly shaped the sound and appearence of today’s pianos and grands.
Through letters and drawings with ideas to improve the instruments he stayed from Germany in frequent contact with his father and brothers in New York.
In 1858-1859, Steinway & Sons built the first overstrung concert grands: 17-note bass section; overstrung; ¾ flat plate; curved bass bridge; agraffes throughout;sctional case, square tail.
In 1859 – 1860, Theodore Steinweg made in Braunschweig his own grand piano’s with the same characteristics.
