‘Janissary pianos,’ like this one, were outfitted with extra pedals to activate the instrument’s special effects, mimicking the sounds of other musical instruments — including the bassoon, harp, bells, and a loud bass drum. Additional pedals control the una corda (the “soft pedal”), the dampers, and both a strong and medium moderator (a layer of leather brought between the hammers and strings to mute the sound).

This 6-octave piano can be played loudly with thunderous accents from the seventh pedal (bells and drum) or with extraordinarily soft effects, by using combinations of the soft pedal, harp, and dampers.

The case is made of purpleheart wood, inlaid with ebony and fruitwood, and covered with inked drawings of landscapes, lovers, tiny portraits, flowers, and the signature Anton Martin Thÿm/No. 94, Vienne.
