The first upright grand was developed in London by the pianobuilder Stodart in 1795. The strings left the keyboard straight up into the tail. This way of construction was copied in Vienna. Seuffert and Seydel made their own version of this type of piano. Inside the instrument, there is a lot of space, which is largely taken by the bass strings. The shorter strings leave a lot of open space, these spaces were filled with book shelves.
