The instruments of harpsichord maker Pascal Taskin represent a pinnacle of French harpsichord making in the second half of the 18th century. This two-manual instrument is designed to appear as if it were a rebuild of an old Dutch instrument from the renowned workshop of the Flemish Ruckers family. Their harpsichords were particularly valuable. The 17th-century Dutch scene depicted on the lid, along with several other details, is intended to attest to this provenance. In contrast, the delicate chinoiserie in gold and silver on the harpsichord's exterior surfaces is entirely in keeping with the style of the period.
