This square piano was made by John Bland in London, England around 1790. This instrument may have been made for John Bland to sell by James Henry Houston, a London maker from 1790. It shares some details with other instruments known to be by Houston, and it is known that Houston made pianos for Bland. Another square piano with John Bland’s inscription is attributed by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to Houston & Co. This piano is serial number 1227 and has a compass of FF-f3, single (Zumpe) action, leather hammers, double-strings throughout, 2 hand stops: dampers and lute, wood frame, and a mahogany case
