The Piano-Quatuor: A Piano With a Bow

In the nineteenth century, instrument makers were fascinated by the possibility of combining the expressive qualities of different instruments. The piano was already capable of remarkable dynamic variety, but its sound had one fundamental limitation: once a hammer struck a string, the note could only gradually fade away. What if, instead, a keyboard instrument could produce a sustained, singing tone like a violin or cello?
One ingenious answer was the Piano-Quatuor, patented in Paris in 1865 by Hubert Cyrille Baudet. Rather than using hammers to strike its strings, the instrument uses bowing to make them vibrate.
How does it work?
On a conventional piano, pressing a key causes a hammer to strike a string. The hammer immediately falls away, leaving the string to vibrate and the sound to decay.
The Piano-Quatuor works in a completely different way. When a key is pressed, its mechanism brings a small bow into contact with the string. The bow continues to excite the string for as long as the key is held down. The result is a sustained tone with a distinctly violin-like quality.
The keyboard therefore does two things at once: it determines the pitch of the note and controls the action that brings the bow into contact with the string. Instead of a brief percussive attack followed by decay, the performer can sustain a note for as long as the mechanism allows.
Bringing the violin to the keyboard
The idea belongs to a long tradition of attempts to give keyboard instruments the expressive qualities of bowed strings.
The piano had enormous advantages: it allowed one player to produce harmony and melody simultaneously, but its individual notes could not normally be sustained indefinitely. The violin, by contrast, could sustain a note and shape it continuously with the bow.
Baudet's invention attempted to combine these two worlds. The performer could use the familiar layout of a keyboard while producing a sound that was closer to a small ensemble of bowed instruments.
The name Piano-Quatuor itself suggests this ambition. Rather than simply being another type of piano, it belonged to the nineteenth-century fascination with hybrid instruments—machines that could reproduce or combine the characteristics of several instruments in a single cabinet.
A different kind of piano playing
The technique required of the performer was consequently rather different from that of an ordinary piano. On a piano, the player controls the sound principally through the speed and force with which the keys are depressed. On a bowed instrument, however, the sustained sound depends upon the continuing interaction between bow and string.
The Piano-Quatuor brings something of this relationship to the keyboard. A held key becomes analogous to a finger sustaining a note while a bow continues to draw sound from the string.
This could give the instrument a particularly expressive quality, especially for melodies. Long notes could be sustained rather than simply allowed to decay, making it possible to imitate the vocal line of a singer or the sustained phrasing of a violinist.
The nineteenth-century search for new sounds
The Piano-Quatuor is also a product of its period. The nineteenth century was an extraordinary age of musical invention. Instrument makers experimented with mechanisms for producing new colours, greater volume and greater expressive control.
There were pianos with additional strings, sympathetic strings, multiple keyboards, unusual actions and mechanisms designed to imitate bells, harps, guitars and other instruments. Some inventions were commercially successful; many disappeared almost as quickly as they had appeared.
Baudet's Piano-Quatuor belongs to this inventive world. It demonstrates that the boundaries between instruments were not fixed. A piano did not necessarily have to sound like a piano. Its keyboard could become the starting point for experiments in producing entirely different kinds of sound.
A piano that sings
What makes the Piano-Quatuor particularly fascinating is the simplicity of the musical idea behind its complicated mechanism. The piano had made polyphonic music accessible to a single performer, but the bowed string remained one of the great models of musical expressiveness. Baudet's invention attempted to put that sustained, singing quality under the fingers of a keyboard player.
It is therefore more than an unusual nineteenth-century curiosity. It represents a moment when instrument makers were asking a fundamental question: what else could a keyboard do?
