When a Piano Played Itself: Henderson's Extraordinary Upright Grand Barrel Piano

Imagine entering a fashionable drawing room in Regency London. Standing before you is an elegant rosewood upright grand piano, rising over two metres high and decorated with delicate brass inlay. At first glance it appears to be an impressive domestic instrument, waiting for a skilled musician to sit at its keyboard.
Then someone winds a clockwork mechanism.
Without a performer touching the keys, the piano springs to life, filling the room with music entirely under its own power.
This remarkable feat was made possible by one of the rarest forms of piano ever built: the upright grand combined with a barrel piano. Dating from around 1825, the Henderson instrument preserved in the Chris Maene Collection is a fascinating marriage of musical craftsmanship, mechanical engineering and domestic entertainment.
A Piano with Two Personalities
Unlike an ordinary piano, this instrument could be played in two entirely different ways.
The first was familiar. A pianist sat at the keyboard, performing on a six-octave instrument with ivory naturals, ebony sharps and two pedals controlling the dampers and keyboard shift.
The second was extraordinary.
Hidden within the cabinet is a complete barrel piano mechanism. Instead of relying upon a human performer, a carefully programmed wooden cylinder—or barrel—controls the music. As the barrel rotates, rows of precisely positioned pins activate a complex mechanism that causes a second set of hammers to strike the strings automatically.
In effect, the piano becomes a self-playing musical machine.
How Does a Barrel Piano Work?
Long before electricity, electronics or recorded sound, inventors devised ingenious ways of automating musical performance.
The Henderson instrument is powered by clockwork, driven by a series of heavy lead weights. As these weights descend under gravity, they provide a steady source of energy that turns the barrel at a carefully regulated speed.
Embedded in the rotating cylinder are thousands of small metal pins. Each pin represents a musical note. As the barrel turns, the pins lift levers inside the mechanism, triggering hammers that strike the piano strings.
The system is remarkably similar in principle to a mechanical music box, but on a vastly larger and more sophisticated scale.
The barrel fitted to the Henderson piano contains ten separate musical pieces, allowing the owner to select different works for automatic performance.
Why Combine a Piano and a Barrel Organ?
During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, mechanical music enjoyed enormous popularity.
Barrel organs entertained visitors in churches, streets and public gardens, while musical clocks and automata delighted wealthy collectors. At the same time, the pianoforte had become the fashionable instrument of the drawing room.
Henderson's ingenious solution brought these two worlds together.
The owner could perform personally when friends visited, demonstrating musical accomplishment and taste. Yet the same instrument could also provide music automatically during social gatherings, meals or receptions, even when no pianist was available.
It was an early nineteenth-century equivalent of having both a grand piano and a sophisticated music player in a single piece of furniture.
Engineering Hidden Behind Elegance
Although the piano appears refined and graceful, its interior contains an astonishing amount of machinery.
The instrument must accommodate:
a conventional piano action;
a complete second hammer mechanism;
the rotating music barrel;
clockwork gearing;
weight-driven power system;
controls for selecting the musical programme.
All of this is housed within a beautifully proportioned rosewood case standing an impressive 223 cm high.
The cabinet itself reflects Regency taste, with rich rosewood veneers enhanced by elegant brass inlay. To visitors, it appeared to be a luxurious upright piano. Only when the mechanism was wound did its hidden identity reveal itself.

Little James Street lay in the heart of London's thriving instrument-making district during the early nineteenth century. Piano builders, organ makers, cabinet makers and clockmakers often worked in close proximity, sharing skills and technologies.
This unusual hybrid instrument demonstrates how these crafts overlapped. Henderson was not simply building a piano; he was combining the traditions of keyboard making, precision engineering and automated musical performance into a single instrument.
A Victorian Future Before the Victorians
Today we often think of self-playing pianos as inventions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when pneumatic player pianos became popular in middle-class homes.
The Henderson barrel piano reminds us that the dream of automated music was much older.
Decades before punched paper rolls and electric motors, craftsmen had already solved the problem mechanically using weights, gears, levers and carefully programmed wooden barrels. Every note had to be planned, every pin positioned by hand and every movement precisely coordinated.
It was, in effect, an early programmable machine.
A Rare Survivor
Few hybrid instruments of this complexity survive today. Their intricate mechanisms were expensive to build, difficult to maintain and often altered as musical fashions changed.
The Henderson upright grand combined with a barrel piano therefore represents far more than an unusual curiosity. It captures a moment when inventors sought to blur the boundary between performer and machine, combining elegant furniture, musical craftsmanship and remarkable engineering into a single instrument.
Standing before it today, it is easy to admire its polished rosewood cabinet. Yet its greatest achievement lies hidden within: a clockwork musician patiently waiting to perform, just as it did two centuries ago, without ever needing to place a finger on the keyboard.
